Docomomo UK

Docomomo is a charity formed in 1990 according to the aims of the Eindhoven Statement. It was set up to protect leading Modernist buildings that were threatened with demolition and decay. Over the past 20 years there is more recognition of the significance of these buildings, but there is still a lot to be done: important Modernist buildings are still under threat. Join Docomomo to appreciate and understand the Modern Movement and help preserve our cultural heritage.

Docomomo-uk is a group of architects, researchers, and other enthusiasts of the Modern Movement in Architecture. This phenomena came about in the 1920s and 30s fired by new discoveries in materials and techniques, and by the need for social change. It is a Movement that defines the 20th and 21st centuries as it left historicism behind and created a new identity. We live in an age of discovery and progress; Docomomo seeks to highlight and protect these achievements.

We meet regularly in central London over a glass of wine for evening lectures and discussions about leading Modernist architects, their work and ideas. We also organise study trips and visits in the UK and abroad. Our Newsletter is published twice a year and it reports and reflects on our current activities. We are regularly consulted when Modernist buildings are threatened, and need a stronger membership to make our voice more powerful in the ongoing debate, particularly as post-war Modernist buildings and estates come up for review. Join Docomomo-uk now using the enclosed membership form, and you will receive regular emails about our activities. You don’t need to be an architect to join, just enthusiastic about the Modern Movement.
